Two Villages in Israel Attempt to Revive Aramaic, the Language that Jesus Spoke

Two villages in the Holy Land's tiny Christian community are teaching Aramaic in an ambitious effort to revive the language that Jesus spoke, centuries after it all but disappeared from the Middle East.

JPMorgan's Complex Trading Loss Highlights Need For Simpler Banking

hcsp.jpg Even as details trickle out about how JPMorgan Chase lost several billion dollars on derivatives trades, the essential unknowns continue to outweigh the knowns. This inevitable ignorance is worth keeping in mind as -- let us hope -- regulators focus on the latest fiasco as a teachable moment, and impose rules to protect taxpayers against another system-wide catastrophe.

In Some States, The Tax Man Is Getting Tougher

hcsp.jpg Dentist Frank Illuzzi was stunned when Vermont tax collectors began demanding a 6 percent sales tax on the value of toothbrushes and floss he hands out to patients. Senior care facility operator Jay Grimes was similarly surprised to get a $350,000 bill slapping a 9 percent restaurant tax on the meals served to residents in the dining room. Landscaper Richard "Buckwheat" Lowe got $18,000 in bills taxing him for the first time ever on the mulch he sells.

In this May 17, 2012 photo, Richard Lowe poses atop a pile of mulch in Morrisville, Vt. Nursery owners and landscapers around Vermont have been getting big bills from the state recently for unpaid sales taxes on products like bark mulch and soil additives that many thought had an agricultural exemption from the 6 percent levy.

The Spend Now Generation

hcsp.jpg
The harsh reality of the recession is fading.

People are forgetting the lessons I had hoped that they would learn. They're turning back to credit and boosting their spending. And young adults, many of whom can't find good jobs and are struggling with student loan debt, are doing their part to be conspicuous consumers by making luxury purchases a priority, reports Julie Halpert of The Fiscal Times.

Cities with the Most Homes in Foreclosure

hcsp.jpg According to data released last week, the worst effects of the housing crisis are beginning to wind down. RealtyTrac's latest report shows the number of foreclosures in the U.S. in April is down 13 percent to 188,780 from 219,258 a year ago. However, some of the largest cities in the U.S. continue to lag behind the rest of the country, and still have long to go before the housing crash has fully run its course.
